The Grassroots Movement to Normalize Mental Health
In a bold step towards addressing the stigma surrounding mental health in Liberia, the Rebecca Blamo’s Mental Health Awareness and Well-being C.I.C. Liberia Project has launched a five-day public campaign titled “Taking Mental Health to the Street.” The campaign, which kicked off on April 14th, 2023, aims to bridge the gap between mental health services and the communities that often lack access to them.
The Campaign’s Goals and Objectives
•
-
• Raise awareness about mental health
• Promote understanding and reduce stigma
• Provide mental health resources and support
The campaign is being implemented across key locations in Montserrado and Margibi Counties, including Duport Road Market, ELWA Market, Waterside, Red Light, and Kakata. It is a non-clinical initiative that relies on direct street outreach to reach its target audience.
The Importance of Mental Health Awareness
Mental health is a universal concern that affects us all, regardless of our background, age, or socioeconomic status. However, in Liberia, mental health services are often inaccessible due to factors such as lack of funding, inadequate infrastructure, and cultural stigma. This is why the Rebecca Blamo’s Mental Health Awareness and Well-being C.I.C. Liberia Project has taken a grassroots approach to address this issue.
Key Activities and Initiatives
•
-
• Megaphone Campaign: Volunteers used megaphones to deliver public messages about mental health awareness. • Peer Support Groups: Individuals came together to share their feelings, personal stories, and provide mutual support in a safe space. • Trauma Workshops: Participants learned to understand and heal from past emotional wounds. • Educational Outreach Program: Flyers and leaflets were distributed to inform communities about common mental health challenges such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety.
These activities, powered entirely by volunteers and shaped by lived experiences, have made mental health education and support more accessible to communities across Liberia.
