Three timelines, one bead of glue

Hot-melt adhesive doesn't dry the way a water-based glue does — it doesn't lose moisture, it simply cools from molten back to solid. That means the timeline is governed by heat: how hot the glue started, how quickly the surrounding material pulls that heat away, and how much glue there is to cool through.

A high-temp gun on a nonporous surface with a thick bead is the slowest combination, because there's the most heat to lose and nowhere for it to go. A low-temp gun on a porous surface with a thin bead is the fastest, because there's less heat to begin with and the material helps pull it away. Most real projects sit somewhere in between.

What's the difference between open time, set time, and full cure?

Open time is the brief window right after applying the glue when it's still workable — you can still shift a piece into place. Set time is how long until the bond is touch-safe and holds its own weight without you pinching it. Full cure is when the bond reaches its maximum strength, which chemically and physically takes far longer than the surface feels dry.

Why does a porous material set faster than a nonporous one?

A porous surface — fabric, wood, paper, felt — draws heat out of the glue as it soaks in slightly at the surface, cooling and setting the bead faster. A nonporous surface like plastic, glass, metal, or ceramic can't wick that heat away, so the glue stays warm and workable for longer before it locks in place.

Why does a low-temp gun set faster than a high-temp gun?

A low-temp gun melts glue to a lower starting temperature, so there's a smaller gap between the glue and room temperature for it to cool through before it solidifies. A high-temp gun starts hotter — which usually means a stronger initial bond — but takes correspondingly longer to cool all the way down.

Do I need to wait for full cure before handling the project?

No — the set time is what matters for normal handling; full cure is closer to the time until the bond is at maximum strength for stress, weight, or repeated flexing. For a lightweight decorative piece the set time is usually all you need to wait for before moving on to the next step.
